When I asked to interview Janice Hadlow, the current controller of BBC Two who oversaw BBC Four at the height of its drama output, my request was politely declined. Perhaps Hadlow feared difficult questions about the future of a channel that is, admittedly, no longer under her jurisdiction. Following severe budget cuts, original drama will disappear altogether from BBC Four, and yet, somehow, you wonder whether something so clearly shot on a shoestring as The Road to Coronation Street would really make such a dent in the channel’s dwindling finances.
